Joseph Hubertus "Joe" Pilates
(* December 9, 1883 in Mönchengladbach; † October 9, 1967 in New York) was a German physical trainer . He suffered from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever as a child. His love of exercise awakened his special body awareness at an early age. He began to strengthen his body at a young age and became intensively involved in kinesiology. In addition to gymnastics, bodybuilding and skiing, he also read a lot about training methods such as yoga and Zen meditation. Joseph Pilates thus developed a highly effective, holistic system of exercises to tone and relax the muscles and thus become more flexible.
At the age of 19, Pilates took his fitness skills on the road. He worked as a circus performer and professional boxer in England. During the First World War, he taught soldiers wrestling and self-defense. In the war camp, he developed resistance training equipment from bedsprings to train sick soldiers.
After the war, he returned to Germany to work as a sports instructor for the Hamburg military police. Nevertheless, he was drawn to faraway places again. On his trip to the USA, he met his future wife Chiara on a passenger ship. Together with her, he opened a gym in New York and specialized in what he called CONTROLOGY. CONTROLOGY (later “Pilates”) focused on core strengthening, spinal alignment and breathing awareness. The studio quickly became famous and was particularly popular with performers from the dance scene. Ballet dancers and choreographers were enthusiastic supporters of Pilates. Today, many celebrities practise Pilates. Actresses such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Hudson, music icons, Madonna and footballers such as Ronaldo and David Beckham.
More and more men are becoming enthusiastic about this challenging physical exercise. After the beginnings of the Pilates method over 100 years ago, it is hardly surprising. Men were the first target group.
Every single Pilates exercise requires physically precise work. The contours of the body are shaped and toned. Concentrating on the centered execution of the exercises strengthens our body awareness in the long term. Conscious breathing and harmonious movements have a calming and relaxing effect.
